Ryland is a 5 year old boy who lives with cerebral palsy, also known as CP. CP is a disorder of muscle tone, movement, and/or posture that’s caused as a result of damage to the developing brain, most often before birth. In Ryland’s case, he was deprived of oxygen in utero for an extended amount of time during labor & delivery. He went to the NICU immediately after being born, and spent his first 3 weeks of life there. Ryland also has epilepsy, which is a neurological disorder in which a person has sudden, recurrent seizures associated with abnormal electrical activity in the brain. He began having seizures the night he was born, and has continued to have them since. He is prescribed 5 medications to keep them controlled, including a rescue med that he receives when he has longer than normal seizures, or many seizures in a small period of time.
He has had several surgeries in his 5 years, including a feeding tube placement, a nissen fundoplication, and hardware screwed into both hips. He is unable to eat or drink by mouth, and he can only stand, walk, and talk with the help of adaptive equipment.
Since Ryland is non-verbal, he speaks with the assistance of a talker, which is a device on his wheelchair that he controls with his head to communicate. He stands with the help of a stander, and can only walk when using a gait trainer (pictured below). He gets daily medications, goes to weekly therapy appointments, and sees many specialists regularly.
Despite his diagnoses, Ryland lives a very full life. He has already completed 3 years of preschool and will be heading to kindergarten in the fall. He enjoys visiting zoos and spending time with family & friends. He loves silly noises, listening to music, and playing with his toys. He can light up a room with his smile, and has the most contagious laugh. Ryland is so smart, and is the happiest, funniest boy we know. We are so incredibly lucky to be his parents, and to get to witness his wonderful personality every day.
We love to educate on all things Ryland, so if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!
