Hotspot Field Trip to Hawkwatch at Lake Erie Metropark (MI)
Hotspot Field Trip to Hawkwatch at Lake Erie Metropark (MI) Date & Time: Sun, Sept 15, 2019 at 8:00 a.m. Rain date: Sat Sept 21, 2019 Meet to Carpool: North Olmsted RTA Park-n-Ride, 5575 Great Northern Blvd, North Olmsted, OH 44070 Map Birding Location: Lake Erie Metropark is about 140 miles from the west side of Cleveland. Lake Erie Metropark (MI), 32481 W Jefferson Ave, Brownstown Charter Twp, MI 48173 Map Leader: Tim Colborn Target Species: Migrating Raptors Description: Mid-September is a terrific time of year for hawk migration through the upper mid-west. While eastern North American raptors migrate through the area between late August right through early winter, the dates we have chosen give us the best opportunity to see large kettles of Broad-winged Hawks. In addition, good numbers of American Kestrels and Sharp-shinned Hawks should be on the move as well as a few other raptors and some songbirds such as Cedar Waxwings and Blue Jays. Logistics: Participants should bring a lawn chair, food and beverages, and a scope if they have one (if not, the leader will have a scope to share). Plan on being at the hawkwatch for the majority of the day (likely until 3:00pm or 4:00pm) and then we’ll return. This is a relatively sedentary type of birding as we sit and wait to see individual and groups of birds move high across the small bay. There are hiking paths nearby for those who need to stretch their legs or find the hawk watching too slow. Birders should dress appropriately for the weather, often still very warm in mid-September. Bugs are not a major problem at this time of year but folks should bring bug spray if they prefer. Registration Required: Due to the nature of the extended travel, anyone interested should e-mail the trip leader to confirm their attendance by Sunday, September 8th, 2019. Trip leader will monitor weather and contact participants to confirm the date or communication postponement until the following week. Trip Leader e-mail: email@example.com.
