Christmas Tales and Ales

Saturday, November 23, 2019, 2:30 AM

Who says that religion and beer can’t go well together?  Russ Tripi of John Carroll University’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies is bound to prove otherwise with this one of a kind “Happy Hour” event, based on the popular college course "The History of Christmas"!  From pagan parties to soda can Santas, Russ will guide you through an entertaining evening of craft beer tasting paired with a deconstructive look at the origins, history, and rituals of the Christmas Season. Craft Beer samples, appetizers, desserts, and coffee included in ticket price. 21 and older only.  Legal ID required at the door. Book early because space is limited! Ticket sales will end on Friday, Nov. 15th. Sorry, there are no refunds. All proceeds support St. Bartholomew Church. Be advised: Presentation will contain some references to "mature content." FAQs Who is this geared toward? Groups of friends, family, coworkers looking for a unique happy hour experience.  Come as a group and claim a table or come on your own and make new friends. What topics will be covered? Throughout the evening, each major topic will be be paired with a beer tasting.  They include the nativity story from an historical perspective, rejected Gospel accounts, pagan influences, the Puritan ban, Washington Irving, the cult of St. Nicholas, and the role of media in the formation of modern traditions. What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? We will be using the hall located in St. Bartholomew’s Church and there is plenty of parking in the attached lot.  We recommend appointing a designated driver (will receive a reduced ticket price) for your party or the use of Uber/Lyft. It’s at a church, so is this like a religious thing? Unless you worship beer or have an interesting fascination with leg lamps, this is not a "spiritual" or "denominational" event.  The presentation is an informative tongue and cheek look at a holiday that is universally recognized regardless of religious affiliation.   Nonchristians, non-religious, anyone who wants to learn more about the origins and development of what we call "Christmas" today (or just really interested in tasting some beer) are welcome!  No preaching guaranteed! Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? Yes, 21 and older only.  Legal ID required for admission.  No one under 21 will be permitted on the premises. How can I contact the organizer with any questions? You can contact Russ Tripi directly at rtripi@jcu.edu. What's the refund policy? Unfortunately, no refunds will be issued.  But tickets are transferable, so if for some unfortunate reason you won't be able to attend, please give your ticket to a friend. Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? Either a printed ticket or your phone will suffice.  Whatever you can do to make the check-in process run smoothly, we'll welcome it! Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends? As long as the person who is attending knows to say your name upon check-in, it's fine by us!
